On August 1st the “D2 Motorway, Stupava – South Interchange” Works have been ceremonially handed over in the presence of Mr. Ján Figeľ, the minister of transport. This important transport connection was built for the investor, Národná diaľničná spoločnosť (the National Motorway Company), by the consortium led by the company Strabag s.r.o., with the participation of the company Doprastav, a.s.

The Works had commenced in 2009 and the initial date of its completion – March 2011 – showed to be unrealistic because of the emergence of new facts after the excavation of the foundation pit bottom. Due to unsuitable subgrade and the high level of groundwater table it was namely necessary to elaborate a varied documentation and to carry out a number of measures such as the construction of bearing geo-sheet under embankments (at some places even the transversal stone drains) and the modification of foundations of five bridges. After having taken these situations into consideration the date of Works completion was changed to December 2011, but the contractor and subcontractors made an enormous effort, thank to which the new motorway section was opened to traffic already starting the beginning of August. The construction of transport connection between the I/2 and II/505 roads (as the left carriageway of the planned D4 motorway) with linking to the existing D2 motorway belonged to this Works scope as well.

As Mr. Ján Figeľ, the minister of transport, has pointed out for the TASR news agency: “This motorway section represents an important part of the D4 Bratislava bypass, which is to be implemented in a more complex way starting 2013.” Mr. Pavol Frešo, the Chief of the Bratislava self-governing region, highly appreciated that by the new motorway section with the junction to the D12 motorway section it will not be only the inhabitants of Bratislava, the capital of the SR, that would be helped, but also the thousands of employees which are daily commuting to Bratislava from the region in pursuit of their jobs. This section is important also for the transiting drivers who transport the goods from the key companies having their production plants in Záhorie and Považie regions via Bratislava and further to Austria or Hungary.

The people living in the areas in question and the drivers are particularly pleased by the fact that their drive from Stupava to Bratislava shall be substantially shortened and speeded up.
